Edinburgh Airport (airport code EDI) is the eighth largest airport in the UK and the second largest airport in Scotland after Glasgow. There are airport expansions on the drawing board which could catapult Edinburgh's airport over Glasgow's in terms of size, and it remains to be seen whether Glasgow feels the need to play a game of one-ups-manship after that. The Edinburgh airport lies less than 10 miles from Edinburgh's city centre, and is accessible via both the M9 and M90 motorways. There have been requests to add a direct link road from the M8 to the airport as well.
Although the Edinburgh Airport is a relatively large airport in the UK, many people coming into Edinburgh are still forced to fly through London. On the way out of Edinburgh, however, there are loads of direct flights to choose from. A complete list of all the airlines serving Edinburgh, and the cities to which they fly, can be found here. Major cities throughout Europe are well-served by flights from Edinburgh, making a quick weekend holiday on the continent easy. The carriers with the longest lists of cities served from Edinburgh are Flyglobespan, easyJet and Flybe.
There are several ways to reach Edinburgh Airport, including rail service, shuttle bus and local bus - you can even ride your bicycle to the airport should you choose. There is an airport bus service called the Airlink Express which runs frequently between the airport and Waverly Bridge in the city centre, but for an even cheaper alternative you can just ride the Lothian Bus number 35 out to the airport. Just remember the 35 is much slower than the Airlink Express, so allot extra travel time in order to not miss your flight. You can research these and other transport options here.
Edinburgh Airport is not overly large, but if you are challenged with directions then make use of the terminal maps you find here. You may need those maps to find - or, alternately, steer clear of - the many enticing shops and restaurants in the airport (more information here), all of which are hoping to help you shed a few pounds.
