London City Airport (airport code LCY) is the smallest of London's international airports, but lies quite close to the city's financial district which makes it very popular with business travellers and regular commuters. The airport has only one runway, and it is a short runway at that - so the size of the aircraft which are permitted to land and take off from London City is limited to the types of flights which are primarily regional. Most of the flights to and from this airport are short haul business flights within Europe. Additionally, the airport has incredibly strict noise restrictions which do not allow for flights between the hours of 21.30 and 5.30 on weekdays (with even more flight restrictions on weekends). All these factors combined make London City the ideal short haul airport.
Not surprisingly, London City Airport is served by relatively few airlines and is seeing a marked increase in the number of corporate aircraft using the airport. The busiest schedules are maintained by Lufthansa Regional, Air France (operated by CityJet), British Airways (operated by BA CityFlyer) and VLM Airlines. The airport is at its busiest during the wintertime, primarily because of the frequent flights to ski resorts operated by Swiss International Air Lines. A complete list of all the airlines serving London City Airport and the cities to which they fly directly can be found here.
You have several choices for transport to London City Airport, including the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) which conveniently connects with the Underground and on which Travelcards are valid. You can read about the DLR and your other options on this page, just click through the selections on the left hand menu or let the Transport for London Journey Planner tell you what your choices are.
Anyone who has grown tired of fighting the crowds at airports like Heathrow or Gatwick will appreciate the small size of London City - the hassles are limited and the queues are infinitely shorter. The hours of waiting between check in and take off are a thing of the past. With less wait time, you may have no need for the services available at the airport, but if you do you can read through the services offered here. There are plans in the works to expand this little airport for increased passenger traffic, but the chances of it becoming a behemoth of an airport that is impossible to navigate are very slim indeed.
