Cheap Flights to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is an excellent place to go for a city break, and not just because of the Red Light District or the open consumption of marijuana. No, really, there is more to the city than just sex and drugs - surely there is rock n'roll somewhere... Oh, and quite a bit of famous art, architecture and history, as well. Definitely more than you can take in with just one long weekend.

Luckily, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (airport code AMS) is one of Europe's main airports - so getting to the canal city is no problem. It is also a treat of an airport, voted world's best several times. (You will, however, want to leave the airport at some point to get into the city.) Schiphol lies just over 15 miles from Amsterdam city centre, and is the home airport for Dutch giant KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Martinair and Transavia. While many of Europe's low cost airlines have moved their flights to smaller airports (those with lower fees), some still operate at Schiphol, including easyJet, SkyEurope and bmibaby. Other airlines which fly from points in the UK are VLM Airlines (from London City), Aer Lingus (from Belfast), British Airways (from Gatwick and Heathrow), bmi (from Aberdeen and Heathrow), Jet2.com (from Manchester and Leeds), Flybe (from Exeter, Norwich and Southampton) and Thomsonfly (from Bournemouth, Coventry and Doncaster-Sheffield). You can see a complete list of the airlines which fly to Amsterdam Schiphol here.

As mentioned, regardless of how lovely the Amsterdam airport is, you will want to spend as little time there as you can and get into the city centre straightaway - you have no time to lose, there is far too much to do in Amsterdam to delay! While you are in the airport, however, if you have need of anything you will find a list of the services available here - including a place to get married right at the airport, if you desire.

To get into Amsterdam itself, there are several means of public transport available, including buses and local trains. The train is certainly the easiest and quickest, but your hotel might offer a complimentary shuttle bus. You can explore your options here. If you prefer to have your own automobile, the car hire agencies operating at Schiphol are listed here.
