Belgium's main international airport, Brussels Airport (airport code BRU), is not in Belgium's main tourist town. It is, however, a good entry point to explore this small country. The airport actually lies in the nearby town of Zaventem, and is sometimes called either Zaventem Airport or Brussels Zaventem International Airport as a result. Brussels Airport was named the best airport in Europe in 2005 based on a passenger survey, and it serves as a hub for Brussels Airlines, European Air Transport and Jet Airways.
There is a long list of airlines serving Brussels, many of which include regular stops in the U.K. Some of those carriers are bmi regional (East Midlands, Edinburgh, Leeds-Bradford), British Airways (Heathrow), Brussels Airlines (Bristol, Gatwick, Manchester, Newcastle), Eastern Airlines, Durham-Tees Valley, Southampton), Flybe (Manchester) and VLM Airlines (London City). For a complete list of airlines with flights in and out of Brussels see the list on this page. If you feel an overwhelming need to spend your precious holiday funds before you even leave the airport (or you have some extra leftover at the end of your trip), you will find a selection of shops and restaurants listed on the drop-down menu here which will all be pleased to take your money. The services available at the Brussels Airport are listed here, including luggage lockers, luggage wrapping and a pharmacy.
If it is possible for there to be too many choices for ground transport, that is the case with Brussels Airport. Of course, there are the usual transit methods - rail and bus service, taxis - but then in this cycling-mad country there is even information included for those who want to ride their bicycle to and from the airport. All transport options are listed here, with specific information accessible by clicking on each option. The airport's rail station is below the terminal and there are four trains each hour which run to the various Brussels stations as well as elsewhere in the country. There are several bus companies serving the airport, but all of them make stops at the same bus station beneath the arrivals hall. Additionally, many area hotels have shuttle buses which run to and from the airport especially for their guests, free of charge. To see if your hotel is one of them, see the list here. Alternately, the car hire companies at the airport are listed here.
