The third largest airport in Ireland is in Cork, after Dublin and Shannon. Additionally, Cork Airport (airport code ORK) is the busiest hub for Aer Arann and an important hub for Aer Lingus. All of this combined means that the Cork Airport is not only important to Ireland but also to Europe. Cork Airport is to the south of Cork City in Ballygarvan, and is sometimes enveloped in fog. Diversions to other airports are not as common as they once were, but delays are not unusual.
There are only a handful of airlines serving Cork, but most of them have regular flights to and from cities in the U.K. Some of the carriers include Aer Arann (Belfast, Bristol, Edinburgh, Jersey, Leeds-Bradford, Southampton), Aer Lingus (Birmingham, Heathrow, Manchester), bmibaby (Birmingham, Manchester), Jet2.com (Newcastle), Ryanair (Liverpool, Gatwick, Stansted) and Air Southwest (Newquay). A full listing of all the airlines with flights in and out of Cork is here. Information for arriving passengers is here, a map of the arrivals hall is here and a map of the upper terminal is here. Should you be overcome by hunger or the sudden need to spend loads of your holiday cash before you even leave the airport, you will find these dining establishments and these shops happy to take your money.
There are many options for ground transport from Cork Airport, which are all listed here. While there is no rail service linking directly to the airport, there is regular bus service on Bus Éireann. The journey to Cork city centre takes just under a half hour. SkyLink also runs a regular shuttle bus between Cork Airport and some of the major hotels in the city, stopping at the airport approximately every 30 minutes. Car hire companies at the airport are listed here.
