When crystal blue waters, white sandy beaches and calamari beckon, you know there is only one place that will satisfy you - Greece. What is more, you can not only enjoy the life of leisure on Greece's famous beaches, you can also expand your brain with a bit of cultural education in the country's equally famous museums. Of course, if lying in the sun all day is too taxing, then by all means, do not bother with the culture - just relax. It is, after all, your holiday.
The Athens International Airport (airport code ATH) is the major airport for both Athens and Greece, and was only opened in 2001 in order to better handle the large numbers of people which would be flooding the city for the 2004 Olympic games. It is a major hub for both Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines (the former has flights from Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester), but there are many other airlines which fly directly from the UK. British Airways flies from Heathrow, easyJet flies from Gatwick and Luton, Excel Airways flies from Gatwick and flyglobespan flies from Glasgow. This is a list of all the airlines serving Athens.
You can reach Athens itself from the airport by using the Metro, regular rail service, buses or coaches, or you can hire a taxi. All ground transport options are listed here, although most of them are from the point of view of reaching the airport from Athens and not the other way round. There are several airports throughout the Greek islands, however, which might be better choices for you - especially if your holiday is focused on beaches rather than the big city of Athens. Below, you will find a bit of information about a few of the biggest airports in Greece outside of Athens, but these are by no means the only airports with direct flights from the UK. Many smaller UK airports have seasonal flights to the Greek Isles during the busy summer season, so check with your home airport for a list of Greek airports served.
