Spending some time on Spain's Costa del Sol always sounds like a brilliant idea when February comes, right? Thanks to busy routes between the United Kingdom and Málaga Airport (airport code AGP), your winter dreams can become reality. Because who wants to go for a round of golf when you have to wear your mackintosh, when you can just as eaily play in sunny Spain?
The Málaga Airport is just under five miles from the city of Málaga, and is the primary airport serving the Costa del Sol. It is a major airport in Spain, and is undergoing an expansion project to built a third terminal, second runway and new car park.
The busiest routes in and out of Málaga are within the EU, and mostly from the U.K. and Ireland. Some of the carriers with regular service from the U.K. are bmibaby (Birmingham, Cardiff, East Midlands, Manchester), easyJet (Bristol, Liverpool, Glasgow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Newcastle, Nottingham), Flybe (Exeter, Norwich, Southampton), Flyglobespan (Durham Tees Valley, Edinburgh, Glasgow), FlyJet (Newcastle), Jet2.com (Belfast-International, Blackpool, Leeds/Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle), Monarch Airlines (Aberdeen, Birmingham, Gatwick, Luton, Manchester) and Thomsonfly (Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Doncaster-Sheffield, London-Gatwick, London-Luton, Manchester, Newcastle) - you can see a list of all the airlines serving Málaga here. Additionally, Aer Lingus is scheduled to begin regular service from Belfast.
Especially during construction, you will need a combination of the airport map provided here and the construction updates here. Getting away from the Málaga Airport is easy with the many choices for ground transport. There is rail service from the airport and it will cost just over €1 to get into Málaga city centre. There are also buses which run between the terminals, and a local bus (Line 19) which will take you into town, both of which are listed here. You will find your public transport options listed here, or if you prefer to hire a car, the agencies operating at the airport are listed here.
