Munich is the capital of Bavaria and the third most populous city in Germany. It's famous for being home to Oktoberfest but it has a lot more to offer to those who fancy a visit. Posh shopping areas, new clubs and recreational parks make Munich a great city for a weekend getaway.
The city is served by Munich International Airport (officially called Franz Josef Strauss International Airport). The airport has been named the best airport in Europe and stands just 17 miles from the city center. It's the second most important airport in Germany and is hub for Lufthansa.
A variety of airlines offer direct flights from UK to Munich; Aer Lingus, easyJet, bmi, Lufthansa and British Airways fly from London (Gatwick and Heathrow); bmi also flies from Manchester and Birmingham, while Aer Lingus flies from Belfast. A list of airlines serving Munich Airport can be found here.
The airport is quite large but easy to navigate thanks to the terminal maps provided here and here. Should you have some spare time or the hunger pangs kicked in, here are the shopping and dining options at the airport.
You might want to check out the visitors terrace, located at Terminal 2 and which offers an incredible view of the airport apron and runways. There's a €2 fee for the adults to access the terrace (free for children) and the terrace is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
If you are traveling with kids, it's a good idea to allow some time for a stop at the Visitors Park. There's a special area designed for children where MUCi the mascot explains how airports work. There are interesting aircrafts to check out and there's also a big playground. Details about the park can be found here.
To get from the airport to the city center, there are quite a lot of ground transportation options available. Two train lines depart to the city every 10 minutes and numerous bus routes connect the airport to Munich. If you prefer to drive your own car, here you can find the car rental agencies available at the airport (and a map to easily find the car rental area).
