Rio de Janeiro is served by Rio de Janeiro/Galeao – Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) or simply known as Galeao International Airport. It is located about 20 km from the city and used to be the busiest airport in Brazil. Unfortunately, the airport is considered a money losing operation which only makes it harder to find cheap flights into Rio. Direct flights from London are offered by bmi, TAM Linhas Aeras and British Airways. If you need to fly from other British city you'll be making at least one stop along the way.
Unfortunately the airport's website doesn't provide any information about the services, airlines or ways to get from the airport to the city center.
Rio de Janeiro is also served by Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) but it only receives flights from Sao Paulo and other domestic destinations.
It is a good idea to look for lights into Sao Paulo. The city is served by three airports, although only two receive international flights. Once you are in Sao Paulo, you can take a low-cost flight into Rio de Janeiro or choose another way to travel between the two cities.
