There are several airport choices for those who need to fly into the San Francisco area but the largest and busiest of them –and most likely where you'll be landing – is San Francisco International Airport.

The airports

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located 13 miles from downtown San Francisco. The airport is a major hub for United Airlines and a hub for Virgin Atlantic. The direct flights from London are offered by bmi, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and United. If you need to fly from other British city, you'll be making at least one stop along the way. Depending on the route chosen, it may be cheaper to choose and indirect flight rather than a direct flight. A complete list of airlines serving SFO can be found here.

There are plenty of choices of transportation to get from the airport to downtown San Francisco, including vans, taxis, limos and the public transport. Details about all of them ca be found on this page. If you prefer to drive your own car, here is a list of car rental agencies available at the airport.

The other two airports serving the San Francisco Bay Area don't receive direct flights from any British city but, in some cases, indirect flights might be cheaper than direct flights, so it's definitely worth it to take a look at the options:
